Is atlas therapy safe?

In short: Atlas Zone Therapy is a safe method. The atlas is never manipulated or cracked. A device developed in Switzerland treats the muscles just below the skull; the vertebra moves only as far as the released tissue allows. Normal reactions in the days after include tiredness, a temporary headache and old aches briefly returning. People undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or with recent neck surgery or unstable injuries, should wait or consult their doctor.

Why the method avoids the main risk of neck treatment

Concerns about upper neck treatment centre on forceful rotation of the top vertebrae. Atlas Zone Therapy does not do this. The vertebra is never pushed, pulled, twisted or thrust. Dr. Wim treats the short suboccipital muscles with controlled vibration until they release. The atlas then settles within the range the tissues allow. The force applied to the vertebra itself is zero.

The method was developed in Switzerland by René Schümperli specifically as a way to treat the upper cervical area safely, and Dr. Wim was certified by him as one of six trainers worldwide. Worldwide, more than two million people have been treated with the atlas correction approach. Atlas Zone Therapy is the only atlas method being studied at Amsterdam UMC.

No x-rays

Assessment is by palpation and functional checks: leg length, pelvis, head rotation, the atlas transverse processes. No imaging means no radiation exposure and no repeated scans, and it is one of the things clients say they value.

Normal reactions after the treatment

The treatment sets a reorganisation in motion. In the first days you may notice:

These are part of the healing process, not signs of harm. Read the full guide to what happens after the treatment.

Who should wait or ask first

Recent neck or skull surgeryDiscuss with your surgeon and with Dr. Wim first
Unstable fracture, suspected ligament instability, acute injuryMedical assessment first; not suitable until stable
Severe osteoporosis, bone disease of the spineTell Dr. Wim; the treatment can usually be adapted
Sudden severe dizziness, new neurological symptomsSee a doctor first to rule out other causes
PregnancySuitable; tell Dr. Wim at booking
ChildrenSuitable at all ages; a parent attends

A complementary treatment, not a replacement

Atlas therapy works alongside medical care. Keep any prescribed medication and follow-up, and tell your doctor you are having the treatment. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, message us with your situation and Dr. Wim will answer personally.

Frequently asked questions

Has anyone been injured by atlas correction?

In more than 15 years and over 10,000 clients, Dr. Wim's practice has no record of injury from the treatment itself. The method contains no thrust, which is the component associated with the rare serious complications of neck manipulation.

Can the atlas be moved too far?

No. The device does not move the vertebra. It releases the muscles; the atlas settles only as far as the tissues allow, which is its natural position.

Is it safe for older people?

Yes. Many of Dr. Wim's clients are in their 60s, 70s and 80s. Tell him about osteoporosis or other bone conditions so he can adapt the pressure.
